It is well known that Meta – the parent company behind Facebook and Instagram – is working on the Metaverse. Two things are clear in this context: the metaverse will have a major impact on our daily lives and the operation of the metaverse will require incredible computing power.
Meta has now announced that the company is working on a high-performance supercomputer. The mainframe, dubbed the “AI Research SuperCluster (RSC)”, is to be used not only for tasks in the metaverse, but also against hate speech and for communication between different cultures. The supercomputer should start operating this summer.
Meta uses supercomputers to lay the infrastructural foundation of the Metaverse
One or the other risks rubbing their eyes while reading the specifications. Meta’s supercomputer is a combination of 16,000 A100 GPU chips from Nvidia. This makes the “AI Research SuperCluster” 20 times faster than the social media giant’s currently most powerful computer. The new supercomputer is the world’s fastest AI computer and its focus could hardly be more diverse. The computer speaks hundreds of languages, can process gigantic amounts of data in real time and independently develop augmented reality tools. The last point in particular should be essential for Meta’s construction of a metaverse.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, the supercomputer must constantly acquire knowledge and constantly learn. Development of the RSC began as early as 2020. To this end, Meta – still Facebook Inc. at the time – founded its own research team with the aim of building the fastest supercomputer in the world.
An RSC is already in use today, consisting of 760 DGX A100s with a total of 6,080 A100 chips. These are connected to each other via Nvidia’s InfiniBand technology with 200 Gbit/s. The system has 175 petabytes of flash storage and an additional 46 petabytes of cache available for fast data processing.
The research group also opted for Nvidia’s flagship chip for the new RSC. Only in this case, 16,000 A100 chips should be used. The chip was specially developed for data centers and AI systems. Each A100 can be partitioned into seven individual GPU instances for unprecedented performance.
An incredible 16TB of data can be delivered by the storage system per second. The team has also developed its own solution for cable management and computer cooling. The supercomputer should be ready in the summer of 2022. Facebook announced in October 2021 that it would now operate under the name Meta.

Meta – Taking Big Steps in the Metaverse

Users develop their own personas, meet friends, buy new content with digital currencies, and constantly drive the online world in a new direction through their behavior. The corona crisis has also shown that we can easily move many things from our daily lives to the internet. Concerts, fairs, meetings and events of all kinds have suddenly taken place online. With the metaverse, all of these things should be able to be experienced in a completely new way, so there should be a smooth transition between the real world and the digital world.
