What is Wahl-O-Mat?

The Wahl-O-Mat is an interactive decision support tool offered online by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (BPB) for regional, federal and European elections. “The Wahl-O-Mat does not give any voting recommendations”, underlines the president of the Federal Agency, Thomas Krüger, “but it shows the position of the parties on current issues. The Wahl-O-Mat was first used in the 2002 federal election. Since then it has been available for over 50 elections. According to the BPB, it has already been used more than 100 million times. The Wahl-O-Mat reached the previous record for the number of uses during the last federal election in 2021. A total of 21.3 million uses were recorded in the run-up to the election.

How does the Wahl-O-Mat work?

Based on pre-selected theses, on which parties running for election state their position, users can use the Wahl-O-Mat to determine which party most represents their own political viewpoint.

For each thesis, there are the following response options: “agree”, “neutral” and “disagree”. Individual theses may be ignored and given special weighting. These count double in the subsequent tally.

After voting and evaluation, the parties are selected with which their own positions are to be compared. The Wahl-O-Mat then calculates the percentage of your own answers that match those of the parties. Which evenings can be selected in the Wahl-O-Mat Schleswig-Holstein?

Any party authorized to stand in the national elections can be selected in the Wahl-O-Mat, provided they have commented on the theses. In order to be admitted to elections in Schleswig-Holstein, parties must register their participation in the elections in good time. A subsequent review by the state election commission decides whether a party can stand for election. In the last regional elections in Schleswig-Holstein in 2017, 13 parties and voter associations stood.

Who develops the Wahl-O-Mat?

Wahl-O-Mat questions are compiled by a youth editorial team of young people and first-time voters in a multi-day workshop. They are supported by experts from the fields of science, statistics and education.

The editors work in several working groups on topics relevant to the respective election and compile 80 to 100 theses, which are sent to the parties for response. They usually have two to three weeks to do this.

The parties’ responses are then checked for their consistency of content with the theses – in the event of discrepancies, the parties are invited to review their positioning. The parties always have the final decision as to the answer that appears in the Wahl-O-Mat.

In the final stage of preparation, the editors select 38 theses which appear in the respective Wahl-O-Mat. According to the BPB, the decisive criteria for this are the theses which
