An online course with an AI tutor achieves a significantly higher success rate than traditional online courses through a personalized learning experience. Does artificial intelligence enable quality education for all?

Artificial intelligence can revolutionize education: instead of mass processing, AI tutors could enable personalized, active and hands-on learning experiences. It can be useful in addition to the crowded classroom, the dry lecture, and especially in combination with online courses that millions of people around the world learn every day.

This last scenario in particular plays a central role in the plans of the learning platform start-up Korbit, since only a small part of humanity has access to quality education. In many parts of the world, there is a lack of educational infrastructure – from school buildings to qualified teaching staff.

AI Tutors Are Supposed To Supervise Online Classes

Although there is also a lack of digital infrastructure in many countries, access to the Internet is often easier than at traditional educational institutions. The corona pandemic has also changed the role of online learning, even in structurally strong regions.

But open online courses don’t always reach those who don’t have access to alternatives. The dropout rate is often over 90%. They do not deliver on the promise of making education possible for all.

Here, artificial intelligence could bridge the gap between access to quality in-person courses and weaker or unguided alternatives: instead of simply taking an online course, an AI tutor can provide personalized support to each participant.

AI Tutor learns in real time and personalizes learning content

Researchers from the University of Bath, the Quebec AI Institute and learning startup Korbit have now shown in a study that AI tutors could transform online learning. The team recruited nearly 200 employees from a Vietnamese company who had no prior knowledge of data science.

Participants took three different data science courses: one group learned via a traditional e-learning platform, a second group learned via the AI-backed Korbit platform, and a third group learned via a variant of Korbit without an AI tutor.

Korbit uses a range of AI models and methods, including language models and reinforcement learning, to deliver a personalized learning experience. The AI tutor learns in real time by interacting with students and automatically adapts content and learning activities. These include video lessons, Socratic lessons, interactive problem-solving exercises, code assignments, and project-based learning.

The AI tutor reacts to incorrect answers with educational interventions, for example giving additional information, explaining certain facts in more detail, visualizing them in diagrams or repeatedly transmitting content in a quiz.

An AI Tutor Leads to More Knowledge and Degrees

The results of Korbit’s AI tutor are impressive: Researchers observed a significant increase in learning outcomesKorbit users realizing a learning gain 2 to 2.5 times higher than users of platforms without an AI tutor.

Graduation rates have also increased significantly: 40.9% completed the course on Korbit, while only 18.5% completed the course on the other platform.

The study is proof of the effect that a personalized, active and AI-supported learning system based on problem-solving exercises and personalized feedback, according to the researchers.

If we could make these AI-based learning experiences accessible to millions of learners around the world, it would be a big step forward in making education accessible to all, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. .
